Michael Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer who was one of the most famous and successful musicians of all time. He was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, and began his career as a child performer with the Jackson 5, a group of siblings who sang and danced together. 

Jackson rose to fame as a solo artist in the 1980s, releasing hit albums such as "Thriller," "Bad," and "Dangerous," which spawned numerous hit singles and turned him into a global icon. He was known for his high-energy performances, elaborate stage shows, and groundbreaking music videos.

Jackson was a pioneer of the music video format, and his videos for songs such as "Beat It," "Billie Jean," and "Thriller" were some of the most iconic and influential of all time. He was also a philanthropist and humanitarian, and used his fame and wealth to help others through charities and various charitable endeavors.

Jackson faced controversy and legal issues later in his career, including allegations of child sexual abuse and his improper use of prescription drugs. 

He died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50, after suffering a cardiac arrest caused by acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication. Despite the controversy surrounding him, Jackson's music and influence continue to be celebrated and his death was mourned by fans around the world.

On this date in 2002, Michael Jackson received the Artist of the Century Award at the American Music Awards. Comedian Chris Tucker presented the award to Michael “for his outstanding musical contributions in the 70s, 80s and 90s”.
